Umbrellas

A lot of K-romance tropes pre confession are about opportunities for proximity in order to foster intimacy and K-drama writers have noticed that sharing an umbrella is a way of killing those two birds with one photogenic stone. It rains often in Korea and the chances of the average K-drama omitting at least one scene in which two people who fancy each other shuffle awkwardly through the rain under a single umbrella are slim. Cross-gender body swapper Mr Queen has a vested interest in subverting romance tropes and does a slick number on the shared umbrella as the king and his ‘dancing’ queen shelter from the plot significant rain for a nice ill-tempered row: ‘Get lost’ – ‘My feelings are hurt, I’m not sleeping with you tonight’ – ‘Best news I’ve had’. Chae Soo-bin’s character in I am not a Robot invents a clear umbrella for star gazing on rainy nights that turns opaque when you want privacy with the person you’re sharing it with – a very niche product anywhere else but a K-drama.
